KATHMANDU, Nov 19: With the start of winter, wine dealers of Kathmandu are expecting the sales to increase, which usually do during the cold season. In comparison to summer, consumption of wines during winter grow approximately by 15 to 20 percent.

Dealers explain that increased number of social and coporate get-togethers and age-old tradition of drinking wine to beat the chill are the major reasons why the sales go up during this time of the year. [break]

"Sale of wines is good during summer and comparatively bad during festive season. But the sale climbs up significantly during winter," said Arjun Bhandari, managing director of Mark Davidson wines.

During summer, as the trend of gifting as well as consuming hard drink is very popular, sale of wine is tardy.

"We are however seeing a slow but positive change in behavior. This festive season, sale of wine was better than it was in last season," said Bhandari.

Wines in different tastes, made of different fruits, and manufactured in different countries are available in the market. But the most popular ones are red wines that are manufactured in Spain.

"Spain has low production cost due to which the wines are comparatively cheaper, which make them more popular in the market," said Bhandari.

Spanish wines per bottle (750 ml) cost about Rs 450 to Rs 500 in the market whereas most of the other wines are nearly Rs 200 more expensive.

"Currently, the market of wines is really slow but is expected to grow during winter as the number of social and corporate parties will be more," said Kunj Shrestha, managing director of K and K International, authorized distributor of Conellann wines.
