Kathmandu, April 9: The 2008 Man-Booker Prize winner, White Tiger written by 34-year-old journalist- turned-freelance writer Arvind Adiga narrates the story of Balram Halwai, a brilliant student from poor family, who emerges to be a successful entrepreneur but eventually falls down.

We went around town asking Kathmanduites to guess what Adiga’s book is all about. Here are the excerpts: [break]

Yuka Shrestha, 13, Student: “I think it is about some extra terrestrial invasion by some jelly-like white colored aliens, which resembles a tiger. I had watched this movie called Mars Attack, where the Martians come to earth. Initially, people thought they were good aliens but they wanted to destroy it. I think White Tiger is also about a similar invasion but I don’t think they are from Mars."

Bijay Shrestha, 25, Marketer: “I think it is about this adventurous guy, who travels throughout the world. One fine day as he was traveling through the mountains he suddenly encountered this queer white Tiger. I think he spent years to study about a tiger, which existed long time back in ice age. Well, if there could be an Yeti, without anyone seeing one, why not a white tiger?”

Tripti Mool, 27, Banker: “I guess it is a fiction book about a rare achievement, some underdog receiving a great success or some genius. But I’m not sure though. It also could be about some animated fiction book too or could it be the translation of Diamond Shumsher’s book in Nepali by the same title?”
