KATHMANDU, April 21: Immediately after offices opened Tuesday, Army chief Rookmangud Katawal furnished his clarification on the three issues sought by the government.

Katawal has said in his clarification letter submitted through Military Secretary Rajendra Chhetri at the Prime Minister’s Office that the army headquarters had duly informed the government, UNMIN and Joint Monitoring Coordination Committee before initiating recruitment process in the army. Responding to the second question of the government, Katawal has said he just followed the Supreme Court orders by giving charge of office to eight brigadier generals who were given retirement by the government.

On the third question related to the army team’s boycott of the Fifth National Games recently, Katawal has said the decision was taken by the Tribhuvan Army Club following written applications from athletes. The athletes had expressed their inability to take part in the games because of the last minute change in the games’ tie sheet.

Katawal in his two-page long response to the government has said he has never challenged the legitimate civilian authority over the army. He said he has unflinching support to the ongoing peace and constitution-making process.
