Western Region finishes on top

KATHMANDU, June 22: Western Region claimed the top spot with six gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the First National School Taekwondo Championship that concluded on Saturday at the semi-covered hall of Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwar.[break]



Central Region finished in the second position with four gold, three silver and five bronze medals while National School Taekwondo Federation (NSTF) secured third position with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.



Ajay Kumar Rijal (55-58 kg) of Gyan Jyoti Academy, Western Region; Ramesh Bishwakarma (40 kg) of Janajyoti Higher Secondary School, National School Taekwondo Federation (NSTF); Rabin Adhikari (55 kg) of Gyan Jyoti, Western Region; Suman Saru Magar (51 kg) of Lakhan Thapa High School, Western Region and Prakash Bhattarai (35 kg) of Eastern Region claimed gold medals in the boys´ section.

In the girls´ section, Srishana Thapa (44 kg) of Shree Pragati High School; Parbati Pandey (52 kg) of Ramnagar Academy, Western Region; Bishna Khatri (49 kg) of Paroha Higher Secondary School, Western Region; Manita Lamsal (38 kg) of Pragati Higher Secondary School, NSTF; Sangita Pulami (42 kg) of Gauri Shankar School, Central Region and Tara Parajuli (46 kg) of Gyan Jyoti, Western Region won golds in their respective weight categories.

A total of six teams -- one each from five development regions and one from NSTF -- had competed for 13 gold medals during the two-day event.



TTV, Image into semis




KATHMANDU : Terai TV and Image Channel on Wednesday advanced into the semifinals of the Sixth Virgin Media Cup Football Tournament underway at the Buddhi Bikas ground, Lagankhel.



TTV defeated Nagarik 3-2 in tie-breaker following a goalless draw in regulation time. Manil Lama of Nagarik was declared the man-of-the-match. In another quarterfinal match, Image Channel edged past Photo Journalist (PJ) Club 2-0. Man -of-the-match Pema Sherpa and Pujan Shrestha scored for the winning side.

Karabor daily and defending champion Nepal Television also made it to the last four winning their respective matches. Karobar toiled hard to beat Channel Nepal 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Santosh Chaudhary of Karobar was declared the man-of-the match.

Nepal Television overcame Kantipur daily 2-1 with a goal each from Dilip Thapa Magar and Bal Krishna Paudel. Samir Tamang of Kantipur won the man-of-the-match award.



Image Channel will meet TTV while Karobar will lock horns with Nepal Television in the semifinal.
