According to the organizers, the Pro-Am event will be played on Saturday, while the first three days will see top professional golfers vying for the championship that will be played over 54 holes in stroke play format.[break]
All the professional and top amateur golfers of the country are already in Pokhara and are being acclimatized. The Pro winner of the tournament will get a check of Rs 80,000, while the runner-up and the first runner-up will get Rs 51,000 and Rs 40,000, respectively. Others in the top 18 will also receive cash prizes.
Rabi Khadka is the defending champion of the tournament.
This is the 11th edition of Western Open and is being organized by Nepal Professional Golfers Association under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd.
Former Olympian Gurung dies
Former Olympian Chitra Bahadur Gurung has passed away on Sunday in the United States. Gurung, 40, was found dead at Colombia Park in Virginia, stated Deepak Bista, the president of Nepal National and International Players´ Association.
Gurung, the national record holder in men´s 50 m freestyle in swimming, had won bronze in 100x4 m relay during the Eighth South Asian Games held in Kathmandu. He had also represented Nepal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was the flag-bearer for Nepal in the march-past during the opening ceremony. He also participated in the 13th and 14th Asian Games held in Bangkok, Thailand in 1998 and Busan, South Korea in 2002, respectively. Gurung had left Nepal after participating in the 2003 World Swimming Championship held in the United States.
LACM ´A´ clinch Football Frenzy
Little Angels´ College of Management (LACM) ´A´ clinched the title of the Toyota Football Frenzy 2010 inter-college five-a-side football championship on Monday. LACM upset Wigan and Leigh College (WLC) 2-0 in the final played at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall.
Sandesh Bista opened the scoring to give LACM a 1-0 lead in the first half. Mumit Pradhat netted the second goal in the second half to seal the victory. WLC tried hard to make a comeback in the match, but to no avail.
Along with the trophy, LACM ´A´ bagged Rs 20,000 as winners. Siddhant Basnet of the winning team was declared the best player while Utsav Shrestha of LACM ´B´ won the highest scorer award for scoring nine goals. Both of them received Rs 5,000 each.
Likewise, School of Tourism and Hotel Management won the fair play award.
Kailash Rajbhandari, the deputy chairman of United Traders-Toyota, distributed prizes to the winners.
