KATHMANDU, Dec 8: Huge amount of gold smuggled through Tribhuvan International Airport has been successfully recovered. Approximately 14 kg of gold was seized on Thursday night.
Customs officers discovered the gold concealed on Gorkha's Chandra Bahadur Ghale, who had arrived from Dubai. Shobhakant Poudel, the Director-General of the Department of Customs (DoC), mentioned that they had been monitoring the situation for a week after receiving information about an impending illegal gold shipment.
DoC using ‘human error’ excuse to shield suspicious employees
Director-General Poudel, who had received information about the gold smuggling, personally went to the airport at night. "We had been monitoring for a week after receiving information that gold was being brought in illegally," he stated.
Upon learning that a man had arrived with gold, they tracked him from the moment he came out from the plane. The smugglers were wearing a black jacket on the outside and a half-shirt on the inside. They had sewed a piece of cloth to hold gold bars, cleverly shaped like biscuits, and concealed them within.
Director-General Poudel confirmed that legal action will be taken once the gold recovery process is complete.
There are suspicions regarding how the gold was smuggled through Dubai customs. Earlier, 61 kg of gold was recovered from Tribhuvan International Airport on July 19.
