KATHMANDU, Nov 2: The World Bank Tuesday launched the Program for Accountability in Nepal (PRAN), a capacity development program that aims to enhance knowledge and skill of diverse constituencies to promote greater accountability of government institutions and programs.

The program will work with state and non-state actors, such as civil society organizations, media, research groups and committees of parliament to increase their capacity, improve transparency, responsiveness and accountability of the processes of governance and public service delivery through the implementation of mechanisms of ´social accountability´.[break]

Examples from around the world show that practices like independent budget analysis, participatory public expenditure tracking, civil society oversight of public procurement processes and social audits can bring important benefits in fighting corruption, enhancing efficiency and quality of public services, empowering citizens and improving civil society-state relations, the World Bank said in a statement.

On the occasion, Social Accountability Share Fair was also organized to showcase 20 out of the various social accountability initiatives that are going on in the country.

The PRAN, which will become operational in the coming months, will support social accountability activities in three focal areas -- public financial management, municipal governance and public service delivery.
