ITAHARI, July 3: The water level in the Saptakoshi River has been rising continuously since Friday morning. As per the measurement at 6 PM on Friday, the water flow had reached 154,325 cusec per second.

Though water level in the river has been rising continuously, there has been no problem in the area so far. According to the Koshi Barrage Control Room, 24 of the 56 gates are now open. The local administration office said that the Indian side would be requested to open other doors as per the need if the water level rises.

As soon as the flow of water in the Koshi Barrage crosses 150,000, a red light is lit on the west side to warn the public. Similarly, if the water level crosses 200,000 another red light indicating danger is lit to the east. A red light will be lit in the middle of the river if the water level crosses 300,000 cusec per second.

It is mentioned that the Koshi Barrage has a capacity of 950,000 cusecs of water. However, No exact estimation can be made due to the accumulation of sand in the upper part of the barrage and the flow of water has remained below 400,000 in the last few years.
