BIRATNAGAR, July 28: Erratic weather has led to a rapid spread of viral fever in Biratnagar. Fluctuation in temperature has led to the spread of viral fever, said doctors at Koshi Zonal Hospital.

At least 50 patients suffering from the aliment have been visiting Koshi Zonal Hospital every day. For over a week, weather condition in Biratnagar has fluctuated between rainy to dry and hot. Despite intermittent rainfall, maximum temperature has not gone down below 33 degree Celsius. [break]

With increasing pressure of patients at the 10-bed emergency ward of the zonal hospital, patients are being examined and treated on the floor.

“We have accommodated two patients on a single bed,” said hospital staff Raghunath Adhikari. Half of the patients who have contracted viral fever are children.

Nawaraj Subba, chief of District Public Health Office (DPHO) Morang said teams of health workers have left for areas affected by viral fever.

“Public awareness campaign is being conducted to protect people from viral fever,” Subba added.

Two weeks ago, over 300 inmates of Biratnagar prison had contracted viral fever. It took a week to cure them.

Health workers have observed that though viral fever could be cured within 24 hours in the past, this year it is taking three to four days.
