Hukum Dev Yadav, 72, is inconsolable after hearing about the death of his granddaughter and three daughters-in-law who had gone to take a dip in the Koshi River at Barahakshetra, Sunsari on the occasion of Kartik Purnima.
His granddaughter Ambika Yadav, 18, who was a 12th grader, her mother Sumitra Devi, 35, and aunts Niro and Raj Kumari were killed in the accident. “The god has been unfair in taking away my granddaughter who was to be married soon and my daughters-in-law and leaving us old couple alone,” Sagariya Devi, Hukum´s wife bemoaned.
Ambika´s father Bhuwaneshwar, who left the country for working abroad hoping to earn enough money to ensure better education for his daughter and then marry her off to a rich groom, has not been told about the tragedy till Thursday evening.

“He has been toiling in foreign soil to ensure better life for his daughter and wife. I have not been able to muster enough courage to tell him about their deaths,” said Bhuwaneshwar´s elder brother Chandeshwar who himself lost his wife in the accident.
“He has been calling since morning and asking what happened. I have been avoiding till now saying it was just a minor accident,” Chandeshwar added.
Mantoriya Devi, whose house is close to that of the Yadavs, has also lost her sister-in-law in the accident while Hari Chand Yadav, who had gone to Barahakshetra along with wife Sonawati and teenaged son Dharma Raj, is now mourning their deaths at hospital.
Rajesh Yadav, a villager, said the deceased 15 would be cremated together after their bodies arrive in the village.
