KATHMANDU, March 17: The counting of votes cast in the election to the Vice President has begun. The counting of votes has begun in two places in the Lhotse chamber of the parliament building in New Baneshwar.

The Election Commission (EC) has said that after the counting of votes, the certificate of the vice presidential election will be issued today. Voting started at 10 AM today and ended at 3PM. As many as 311 federal parliamentarians and 518 provincial assembly members cast their votes in the election.

Janamat Party's Mamata Jha, Janata Samajbadi Party's Ramsahay Prasad Yadav and CPN-UML's Asta Laxmi Shakya (Bohara) are in the fray for the second highest post in the country.

There are 332 federal parliamentarians and 550 provincial parliamentarians in the election. The vote weight of a federal parliament member is 79 and that of a provincial assembly member is 48.

In the absence of the President, the work done by the President is done by the Vice President. The Constitution of Nepal mentions that the term of office of the Vice President shall be five years from the date of election.
