KATHMANDU, March 18: Following the re-election of President Bidya Bhandari last week, the incumbent Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun, too, is poised to get reelected to the post for the next five years on Sunday

After Pun's sole candidacy was filed for the post in the given deadline between 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, the Election Commission (EC) will announce his election to the post on Sunday evening, according to EC Spokesperson Nawaraj Dhakal.

Though the election of the vice president was scheduled for March 23, the EC will announce the election of the vice president earlier than the poll date after Pun became the only candidate for the post. Though the Nepali Congress (NC) had fielded its candidates in the presidential race, the opposition party didn't file candidacy for the vice presidential election paving the way for Pun to get elected unopposed. After the announcement of his election to the post, Pun will take the oath of office from the president.

Pun's candidacy was proposed by Pampha Bhusal and Rekha Sharma of CPN (Maoist Center) and Subash Nembang, Parsuram Meghi Gurung and Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal of CPN-UML. Likewise, the proposal was seconded by Jayapuri Gharti and Rajendra Gautam of UML and Ram Narayan Bidari, Onsari Gharti and Dev Gurung of the Maoist Center. According to the election law, a vice presidential candidate needs to muster at least five federal parliament or provincial assembly members to propose the candidacy and another five to second it.

Talking to journalists on the federal parliament premises New Baneshwor after filing his candidacy, Pun said his first term was successful. Former vice commander of the Maoist combatants Pun was elected to the post in October 2015 after the promulgation of the new constitution.
