BIRGUNJ, July 28: Vegetable, fruits and fish vendors in Birgunj have launched an "indefinite" strike from Tuesday demanding halt to the the practice of collecting a local tax known as ´pithiya.´

Due to the strike, most of the vegetable, fruit and fish shops located at Meena Bazar, Maisthan Chowk and other places remained closed on Tuesday, causing inconvenience to locals.

“We will not end our protests until Birgunj Sub Metropolitan Office annuls the provision of pithiya,” Gyasu Miya, one of the protesting vendors, said. They have also threatened strong protests if the concerned authority fails to fulfill their demand immediately.

The vendors have charged that the sub metropolitan city has failed to develop necessary infrastructure for the vendors despite collecting millions of rupees in taxes every year. However, the sub metropolitan city has said that the protest was just an excuse to obstruct the construction of a shopping complex at Meena Bazar.
