BIRGUNJ, April 21: Production of summer vegetables has increased in Parsa this year, compared to figures of last year.

District Agriculture Development Office (DADO), Parsa, has attributed the rise in production to increased productivity and expansion of farming area. Vegetables farming has been done in 1,850 hectares of land in Prasa this year, a rise of 200 hectares compared to last year, according to the office.

Shyam Kishor Yadav, a technical officer with DADO Parsa, said production of summer vegetables is projected to grow to 30,500 tons this year.

More farmers in the district are turning to vegetables farming as it yields more compared to traditional food crops and cash crops.

Bichari Raut, who was busy plucking lady's finger at his farm in Sirsiya village on Wednesday, said he sold lady's finger at Rs 40 per kg from his farm on Tuesday. Raut, who has grown lady's finger in 3 kattha of land, told Republica that production would have increased further had there been irrigation facility.

Farmers in Sirsiya alone have cultivated lady's finger in 30 hectares.

Bitter gourd, cucumber, tomato, and green beans are the other popular vegetables grown in this season.

Meanwhile, vegetable collectors say there has been bumper harvest this season. “Many farmers are approaching us to sell vegetables. We collect vegetables from 8 am to 2 pm and send them to Kathmandu,” Durga Prasad Kushbaha, a vegetable collector, told Republica.
