Data compiled by Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board shows that some of widely used vegetables like potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, French bean, broccoli and mushroom have become dearer over the period. [break]
Red potatoes and white potatoes are selling for Rs 14 and Rs 11 per kg, up from Rs 13 and Rs 10 per kg respectively recorded two weeks ago. Similarly, prices of carrots and cauliflower also went up to Rs 18 and Rs 25 per kg from Rs 16 and Rs 9 per kg respectively over the period.
Price of French bean has almost tripled to Rs 52 per kg from Rs 22 due to sharp decline in production in Dhading, one of the key producing districts. Mushroom and broccoli have also become dearer over the period. Mushroom is selling for Rs 170 per kg from Rs 140 per kg, while broccoli is priced Rs 60 per kg, up from Rs 40.
However, prices of tomatoes have come down over the period. According to the board, big tomatoes are selling for Rs 18 per kg from Rs 45 recorded two weeks ago. Similarly, small tomatoes have dropped to Rs 25 from Rs 62 per kg. Tomatoes had become dearer a fortnight ago due to decline in harvest in key producing districts.
“Prices of popular vegetables went up over the period as this is the transition period between flush and lean season for vegetable supplies,” Bharat Khatiwada, president of Vegetable Wholesalers´ Association at Kalimati market, told myrepublica.com. He also said price of tomatoes have come down remarkably due to improved supplies over the period.
Dry onions and bitter gourds are selling for Rs 18 and Rs 38 per kg, down from Rs 20 and Rs 40 per kg respectively recorded two weeks ago.
According to the board, the arrival of vegetables, fruits, fishes and spices combined has declined to 550 tons per day from around 650 tons recorded a couple of weeks ago.
Popular fruits have also become dearer in the market. Bananas are selling for Rs 40 per dozen, up from Rs 35 recorded a fortnight ago. Similarly, prices of pomegranate and oranges have also gone up to Rs 215 and Rs 60 per kg from Rs 185 and Rs 35 per kg.
However, prices of water melon and cucumber dropped to Rs 15 and Rs 18 per kg from Rs 25 and Rs 26 percent respectively. The prices of apples, grapes and papayas have remained stable at Rs 65, Rs 85 and Rs 26 per kg respectively.
