KATHMANDU, Feb 18: Waste management of 18 local governments in the Kathmandu Valley has been stalled since February 13 due to obstruction caused by local people.

The solid waste piled up in different parts of Kathmandu has not been picked after obstruction by local people for not ensuring timely maintenance of the road to Sisdole, Nuwakot. As a result, garbage has been piled up in different thoroughfares of Kathmandu Valley.

Meanwhile, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has demanded the Department of Roads to immediately complete maintenance works and urged locals to allow waste disposal smoothly.

Chief of KMC’s Department of Environment Sarita Rai said the problem has emerged time and again due to lack of sustainable solution to waste disposal. Garbage management has seen a hiccup due to recurring protests of locals over the failure of the government authorities concerned to maintain the road. The road maintenance initiated nine years ago is yet to be completed.
