US streses peace process completion

KATHMANDU, May 16: With the Constituent Assembly deadline fast approaching, the United States has stressed on completion of peace process on time and urged political parties to translate their commitments to peace agreements into practice.



US ambassador Scott H DeLisi conveyed the US wish to see timely completion of the peace process by meeting Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Upendra Yadav at the latter´s office on Monday.[break]



"He was concerned over the peace process, and said success of the peace process is necessary for political stability and development in Nepal," Yadav told journalists after his meeting with the US ambassador.



Yadav further said, "He said the US wishes to see implementation of political parties´ commitment in the peace process."



Emerging from the meeting, the US ambassador said he discussed a whole range of issues, including the peace process, development and energy sector with Yadav.



DeLisi said he informed Yadav that an assessment team from Peace Corps is visiting Nepal in June to assess the situation to resume Peace Corps in Nepal. Similarly, a US trade team is also arriving in June, DeLisi added.



According to Yadav, the ambassador also discussed Bhutanese and Tibetan refugees issues. "The US is ready to take initiatives to resolve the Bhutanese refugees issue through bilateral and multilateral meetings," Yadav said.
