US pledges additional grant of Rs 8.11b

KATHMANDU, Sept 21: The US government has pledged an additional grant assistance of $111.5 million (about Rs 8.11 billion) to Nepal to fight hunger, improve health and manage climate change.



Lal shankar Ghimire, joint secretary at the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Dr Kevin A Rushing, mission director of US Agency for International Development (USAID) Nepal signed an assistance agreement to this connection on Tuesday, MoF saind in a statement.[break]



With the increase in grant assistance, the US government´s total five year (2009-2014) development assistance to Nepal has now reached $316.5 million. Previously, the two sides had signed the assistance agreement of $ 205 million on September 22 last year.



"The additional assistance will be used to achieve the objectives of the three new initiatives -- global hunger and food security, health and climate change," the statement said.



The assistance aims to help Nepal build and sustain a democratic well-governed state that responds to the need of the people and reduces widespread poverty.
