US, India welcome progress in peace process

KATHMANDU, April 12: The United States and India have welcomed the recent development in the peace process terming the handover of the Maoist cantonments, combatants and weapons as significant progress.



Issuing a press statement on Thursday, the US embassy in Kathmandu commended Nepalese people on the significant advances made toward concluding the peace process. [break]



"The handover of the Maoist cantonments and weapons marks a milestone in this process, and we applaud the national political leadership for their determination and statesmanship at this crucial juncture,” the statement said.



The US has also urged the leaders of all political parties to continue to work together to complete the integration of Maoist combatants into the Nepal Army and the drafting of the new constitution.



"As a long-term friend and partner, the United States strongly supports Nepal´s commitment to peace, democracy and stability," the statement further said.



Issuing a separate statement, Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said India welcomes the agreement reached in taking forward the process of integration and rehabilitation of the former Maoist combatants in consonance with the past agreement.



"We congratulate the Nepalese leadership for the wisdom and spirit of consensus displayed by them to complete the remaining tasks," said the statement.



India has also expressed confidence that the Nepali-led and Nepali-driven political process would be taken to logical end within the time-frame agreed by the political parties, ushering Nepal into new era of peace and democracy.
