KATHMANDU, Sept 9: Fifty Nepali youths from diverse backgrounds participated in a three-day orientation program organized by the Embassy of the United States of America at Gokarna Resort. The participants were the newly selected members of US Embassy Youth Council (USYC) for the 2016-2017. US Ambassador to Nepal, Alaina B Teplitz, inaugurated the event.

The three-day orientation program involved many interaction and motivational sessions.

These sessions featured lectures and master classes on youth leadership, entrepreneurship and youth civic engagement. The featured speakers were past USYC members, representatives of US Embassy and experts from different fields. Renowned personalities like popular Nepali actor Rajesh Hamal and surgeon Bhagwan Koirala were also in the list of speakers.

According to the US Embassy, the main aim of the USYC program is to identify and address the challenges faced by Nepali youths, and to encourage the council members to be change makers in their own communities.    .

“Youth Council is not about the American Embassy telling you what you need. It is about you telling us what tools you need to help build your country into a vibrant democracy with thriving economy,” said Teplitz in her welcome speech.

Teplitz further emphasized the power of entrepreneurship and encouraged the council members to come up with ideas that can be developed into successful businesses and can impact the overall growth of Nepal.

Daayitwa, a Kathmandu based youth-led NGO, is currently managing this US Embassy funded council.
