Unveil Mathema committee report: Dr KC to govt

KATHMANDU, July 1: Dr Govinda KC, a senior professor at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) on Tuesday asked the government to unveil the report prepared by the committee formed to formulate medical education policy.

Issuing a press statement on Tuesday, Dr KC has demanded that the report be immediately unveiled and implemented.

A high-level committee led by Professor Kedar Bhakta Mathema, which was tasked with drafting a new policy for medical education, had submitted its report on Monday to Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.Dr KC had staged fast-unto-death several times in the past, demanding fulfillment of various demands, including formulation of a new policy on medical education. Dr KC has also demanded implementation of all related past accords.

Dr KC's other demands include making MD/MS level education free in all three government's medical colleges. He has sought government order to the Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University to make education at MD/MS levels free of cost also at the private medical colleges affiliated to the universities.

He has also demanded that the government ensure that there is at least one medical college in each of the five development regions and set up a medical college in the midwestern development region immediately.

Dr KC has also expressed concerns over the future of student persuing MBBS degree at the Janaki Medical College (JMC) and Nobel medical colleges.
