The court issued order to detain Sharma on Monday after the District Police Office in its petition sought permission to detain him to carry out further investigations against the marketing scam that raked in billions of rupees from over 300,000 Nepalis across the country.
The police had nabbed Sharma in Pokhara and presented him before the court on the day. Sharma is the secretary of Unity Hospital -- one of more than a dozen operations of ULI. Earlier, police had sent another Unity leader Murari KC to district jail and has been carrying out investigation against him on charges of cheating people.
President of Unity Hospital Baglung Ashok Raj Bhandari, on the other hand, has been released on bail of Rs 50,000, while ULI´s central leader Krishna Pathak has been handed over to Lalitpur District Police Office for further investigation.
The district court had summoned 55 people engaged in the illicit network marketing company, as soon as the police launched actions against the company.
“We have nabbed many of them and the search for others is on. No one will be able to walk free after cheating people,” said Bikash Raj Khanal, deputy superintendent of police.
District Administration Office had launched actions against ULI and taken control over its administrative building and 15-bed Unity Hospital operated in the district to investigate out illicit activities of the company.
However, people who were cheated by the company complained over slow pace of investigation. “We fear the government is lingering the case in the name of investigation,” said Pramod Sharma, one of the deceived members of the company.
Victims of ULI in the district have demanded the government to dispose the company´s property and distribute the money to them proportionately.
