KATHMANDU, April 28: UN Women Nepal and Rakuten Viber, the company behind the messenger and calling app Viber, have forged a partnership to use Viber 'community' as an innovative platform to reach out to communities in order to promote Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE).

Recognizing the need to use the platform to share information and connect with Viber users from Nepal and beyond, the partnership includes the launching of a Viber ‘community’ and two sticker packages, read a press release.

The Viber community serves as an online space that brings people together based on their interests. Using diverse communication materials such as images, infographics, and videos through this new community, UN Women aims to reach key target audiences, disseminate information and raise awareness on topics such as social norms, gender roles, inequality and the need for empowering women, girls, and persons from marginalized groups.

The community will also provide opportunities for interacting with the audience through features such as audience polls as well as sticker packages for users to communicate and raise awareness through their chats.

“Innovation and technology provide numerous opportunities to reach communities,” said Wenny Kusuma, UN Women Nepal Country Representative. “Through this partnership, we aim to work together to use innovation as a key for leveraging our awareness-raising and advocacy efforts.”

Speaking about the partnership, Anubhav Nayyar, Rakuten Viber Senior Director for Asia-Pacific, said, “Viber is honored to partner with UN Women for a noble cause like gender equality and women’s empowerment.

This collaboration addresses several critical issues that exist in our society. Together, we aim to address these concerns by creating awareness among the citizens of Nepal.”
