KATHMANDU, Oct 1: A total of 140 officers of the Nepalese Formed Police Unit (FPU) were awarded the United Nations Medal at a ceremony Thursday by UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti at its headquarters in Cap-Haïtien, according to the UN.

UN FPUs are defined as cohesive mobile police units, providing support to UN operations and ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel and missions, primarily in public order management.[break]

The 140-strong Nepalese FPU, with ten women among its ranks, has been serving in Haiti since May 2012. As part of the mission, the Nepalese peacekeepers carry out patrols with their national counterparts -- the Haitian National Police (PNH).

The FPU also ensures security at the civilian prison in Cap Haïtien, where it provides 2,000 litres of clean drinking water on a daily basis. Nepal has been supplying troops to United Nations peacekeeping missions around the world since 1957, and contributing police for the past twenty years.
