According UML Publicity Department Chief Yogesh Bhattarai, a Standing Committee (SC) meeting of party being held at PM KP Oli’s official residence, Baluwatar, picked leader Bhandari as its candidate for the presidential election.
Citing her contribution in the politics and issue of women representation, Bhandari was picked as candidate for the President according to a leader present in the meeting.
The meeting has also decided to take initiatives to elect Bhandari to the post and sending letter to other parties for the same, added Bhattarai.
Although name of former speaker Subash Chandra Nembang was on the fray for the post, the SC meeting, however, endorsed Bhandari’s name.

An all-party meeting held at the Parliament Building in New Baneshwor on Sunday had failed strike consensus to pick the name for the post of President as both CPN-UML and Nepali Congress sticked to their stances regarding the issue of fielding the consensus candidate to the post.
As per the election schedule published on Saturday, the deadline for registering candidacy to the posts based on consensus was fixed until 1 pm Sunday.
The House meeting on Wednesday is set to elect new president and vice president through majority process as no proposal of candidacy to these posts was registered on the basis of political consensus in accordance with the Article 297 (2 ) of the Constitution of Nepal.
