Taking up a corruption case filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, the Special Court bench comprising Chairman Gauri Bahadur Karki, Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise announced the verdict.

Police had arrested Karki last August while accepting Rs 100,000 from the youth and was suspended from parliament and his party for the wrongdoing.

The court also convicted his accomplice Brahmananda Udasin, and slapped on him four-month jail term and Rs 100,000 in fine, according to Dhir Bahadur Chand, the registrar of the court.

This is the first time a sitting lawmaker has been convicted on corruption charge.

As the verdict can be challenged in the Supreme Court, it will not be implemented immediately.
