UML committee flays US firm for Buddha images on shoes

KATHMANDU, Sept 5: The CPN-UML Valley Coordination Committee on Wednesday expressed its serious concerns over a US-based shoe manufacturing company promoting its shoes with images of the Lord Buddha.



Issuing a press statement, the committed said the Icon Shoe products with the Buddha images have deeply hurt religious sentiments of the Nepali people and the entire Buddhist fraternity around the world. [break]



It has demanded with concerned agencies to immediately clamp ban on production and sale of the shoes and take stern action against the manufacturing company.



Likewise, it also criticized the Baburam Bhattarai-led government for keeping mum on the company’s activity that has ‘undermined (Nepal’s) national sovereignty, independence and the people’s sentiments.´



Buddha was born in Nepal. Of late, the Buddhist fraternity from around the world has flayed the California based company, launched in 1999 by a Holllywood filmmaker, for depicting images of the Buddha on several designs of its shoes.
