UML cadres flee village

SURKHET, April 23: Four UML cadres have left Ghatgaun village following Maoist threats on Thursday.



The chairman of Ghatgaun Village Committee, Nandaram Khanal, along with local activists Dharma Khanal, Hari Khanal and Tara Devkota reached Babiyachaur on Thursday night after they received threats from Maoists. They have been staying at their relatives´ house. [break]



“How could we stay on after the Maoists said they will kill us wherever they find us?” Hari Khanal told myrepublica.com over telephone. He informed that the Maoist cadres on Thursday also vandalized his and Nandaram´s shops.



Meanwhile, the UML district committee organized a press conference in Birendranagar and demanded security for its cadres, treatment for the injured and investigation into the incident.



Committee chairman Shiva Prasad Upadhyay said fear of Maoists has gripped the village. He urged the government to strengthen security situation.



The local administration on its part has said that security personnel have been recalled after situation in Ghatgaun has returned to normalcy.



“We have recalled security personnel following reports that the situation has returned to normalcy,” CDO Birendra Bahadur Baniya said.



After a clash between the UML and Maoist cadres on Wednesday, the Maoists had attacked UML district committee members Mohan Baduwal and Dhir Bahadur Shahi.
