KATHMANDU, April 30: While people displaced by the massive earthquake on Saturday and Sunday are living under the open sky and are dying of hunger due to delay in relief distribution, politicians have started squabbling seeking their role in the distribution of relief to the quake victims.

The main opposition party UCPN (Maoist) has accused the ruling coalition of handling rescue and relief works unilaterally without consulting the opposition parties. The party has demanded that an all-party mechanism be formed to lead the task of rescue and relief distribution.UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Thursday vented ire against the government for not forming an all-party body and not giving any role to them in relief distribution.

"The government has paid no heed to our demand though we have been requesting the government to form an all-party mechanism for relief distribution. This parliamentary party meeting expresses doubt over the government's intention," Dahal said after the UCPN (Maoist)'s parliamentary party meeting on Thursday.

The party also accused the ruling side of dealing with the national crisis in a very autocratic way. "There are also reports of massive irregularities in relief distribution," reads the eight-point decision taken by the meeting.

The party has suggested to the government to provide Rs 300,000 each as relief to the families of the deceased and to provide Rs 500,000 to one million to those who have been displaced by the disaster.

Similarly, it has also asked the government to provide Rs 100,000 to those who were seriously injured in the earthquake.
