ARGHAKHANCHI, July: A same-sex couple has officially registered their marriage in Arghakhanchi. Phulmaya (name changed), a resident of Bhumikasthan Municipality in Arghakhanchi, and Nirmaya (name changed), a resident of Kapilvastu Municipality in Kapilvastu, tied the knot on June 1, 2025. Their marriage was officially registered at a ward office in Arghakhanchi.
According to the ward secretary, the marriage was registered after 23-year-old Phulmaya and 20-year-old Nirmaya appeared with the required documents. “There was some initial confusion,” the ward secretary said, “but after consulting with the concerned authorities, we issued the marriage registration certificate.”

In the registration document, Phulmaya of Arghakhanchi has been listed as the groom and Nirmaya of Kapilvastu as the bride. The couple had been in a romantic relationship for the past one and a half years.
This registration was made possible due to Nepal’s recent recognition of same-sex marriages.
In recent years, a separate register has been maintained to temporarily record same-sex marriages.
Meanwhile, all personal details of the newlywed couple have been anonymized at the request of the couple to maintain privacy.
