Two Nepali referees in SAFF

KATHMANDU, Aug 22: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has appointed two referees from host Nepal for the Eighth SAFF Championship to be held in Kathmandu from August 31 to September 11.



FIFA referee Sudish Pandey and FIFA assistant referee Naniram Thapa Magar are among the 15-member referee panel named by AFC. According to Pandey, altogether six referees and nine assistant referees are nominated for SAFF and a referee assessor.



Among eight participating countries of SAFF, Nepal, Inida, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has one referee each while other referees are from Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Referee Assessor Jindmai Russamee is from Thailand. [break]



Footballer Mani Shah hospitalized




KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Legendary footballer Mani Shah has been admitted to Norvic Hospital due to infection at his leg. According to Shah´s wife Navina, the former national team midfielder was hospitalized on Monday.



Shah has been diagnosed with cellulitis, infection behind the upper layer of skin, at his right leg. "The doctors suggested keeping him in the hospital to prevent it from spreading and his is recovering well," Navina told, "He will be discharged after 2/3 days." Shah is regarded as the all time best footballer of Nepal.



 He was a key member of the national squad that achieved the greatest success in Nepali football, football gold medal in 1993 South Asian of Games, Dhaka. Shah had netted an equalizer against India through freekick in the last moment of the match to salvage a 2-2 draw in the regulation time. Later, Nepal won the final 4-3 in tiebreaker.



Nepal defends team champion title



KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Nepal defended the team champion title of the Third South Asian Waderio Karate Championship. Nepal finished with nine gold, eight silver and a bronze medal in the event held in Madras, India on Saturday. Kailash Basnet and Manish Tamang claimed double gold medals each.



Basnet secured first position in kata and 45 kg category while Tamang took gold in kata and 55 kg category. Sri Lanka secured second position and host India finished third. Meanwhile, Nepal´s coach and the General Secretary of Nepal Waderio Karate Association (NWKA) Hari Saran KC has been honored as best coach by NWKA.



Prime wins two more gold



KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Prime College on Thursday added two more gold medals in its kitty making a total of four golds in the Fourth Krishnadhwaj Memorial School and College Level Table Tennis Championship.



Prime secured top positions in boy´s and girl´s doubles on Thursday, a day after it had secured first positions in boy´s and girl´s team event. Under boy´s doubles Prabin Sherpa and Nihal Shrestha´s pair edged past Pradip Roka and Binesh Khaniya´s pair of same college 9-11, 11-9, 11-13, 14-12, 11-8.



Similarly, Alina Maharjan and Erica Maharjan´s pair of Prime overcame Sunita Lama and Norden Lama´s pair of same college 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-2 for gold. Synatu Shrestha and Avinash Shreshta´s pair took home gold in school boy´s doubles defeating Bhabuk Joshi and Mandip Bhandari´s pair in the final. Renuka Rana Magar of Bijeshwari secured top position in U-14 girl´s singles defeating Premisha Karki of AVM 12-10, 11-8, 11-5. AVM took home school girl´s team event title beatiing AVM 3-2 in final.





JP achieves big win




KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): JP High School achieved a thumping 6-0 win over Rajan Memorial School on Thursday in the girl´s qualifiers from Kathmandu in the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school Football Tournament being held at Chyasal ground, Kathmandu. Anita Tamang achieved hat-trick for JP while Manisha Jirel netted twice and Sunita Tamang added another.



 In other matches, Rupak Memorial overcame Padma Kanya Higher Secondary School 3-0 and Sudesha defeated Aakash Ganga School 4-2 in tiebreaker. The match was settled through tiebreaker after 0-0 draw in the regulation time. Earlier, Sapana Lama was on score sheet twice for Rupak Memorial victory and Binita Magar added another.
