Two minors killed in Gaighat jeep accident

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred as the driver was drunk. Police have detained the jeep driver, Nirjal Katuwal, 18, of Gairun, Triyuga Municipality-9, who had fled the scene right after the incident.

KATHMANDU, March 7: Two sisters have died after being hit by a jeep on the road leading to Triyuga Bus Park in Gaighat, Udayapur.


According to police, Anu Kumari Das, 14, and Devi Kumari Das, 12, originally hailing from Rajbiraj, Saptari and currently living in Gaighat Bazar lost their lives in the accident. Police said that both girls were standing by the roadside when they were struck by the jeep.

The accident occurred on Thursday evening near the DM Gate when the jeep (1-05-001 Ch 092) traveling from Gaighat Bazar to Triyuga Bus Park hit them while they were sitting on the roadside.


Anu Kumari, who was seriously injured in the accident, died on the spot. Another injured, Devi Kumari, died during treatment at the District Hospital in Udayapur, police said.


Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred as the driver was drunk. Police have detained the jeep driver, Nirjal Katuwal, 18, of Gairun, Triyuga Municipality-9, who had fled the scene right after the incident. He was arrested a few hours later. The investigation is currently underway.


The bodies of the deceased have been kept at the District Hospital in Udayapur, and preparations are being made to hand them over to their relatives after post-mortem.
