Two killed, hundreds displaced by floods

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: Two persons were killed and hundreds displaced in landslides following incessant rains across the country on Tuesday.



According to our correspondent from Dadeldhura, two persons were killed and four injured in two separate incidents of landslide in the district. Naru Damai, 45, of Asigram-9 Bhetagaun was buried under the rubble of her house, which collapsed after the landslide. Ganesh Thapa, 3, of Amargadhi-5 also died on the spot while four members of his family were injured when his house collapsed in the landslide on Monday night. Similarly Milan Sundas, 20, of Gorkhe-2, Illam has been missing after being swept away by Mayur river while crossing it on a horse. [break]



Torrential downpour for the past three days has inundated more than a thousand houses in Kailali and displaced 500 families. The displaced persons are taking shelter in open spaces and schools and have nothing to eat.



Superintendent of Police Uttam Singh said more than a thousand houses in Dhangadhi municipality, and Geta, Chuha, Pahalwanpur, Bhajani, Khailad, Ramshikhar, Jhala, Lalbojhi, Joshipur and Dhansinghpur villages have been inundated.



Similarly, the swollen Tinau river swept away over two dozen huts in Butwal´s Shantinagar, Tinaunagar, Hattisund and Buddhanagar. The river has also eroded banks and changed its course towards the squatter settlement in Budhhanagar. Birman Lama, a squatter, said that there had been no human casualties so far.



The Butwal-Bhairahawa section of the Siddhartha Highway has also been obstructed at different points due to the torrential rain. Rupandehi District Agriculture Office said flood in south Rupandehi has inundated a dozen villages and also damaged crops that had been planted recently.



Likewise, paddy plantation in 500 bighas of land in Bodhabar village has been damaged by the floods, while Jhehadi river has swept away two houses in Bhalwad-6, Kapilvastu.



Our Biratnagar correspondent said flood in Bakraha and Mawa rivers have put rural settlements in east and south Morang including Rangeli and Darbesa under threat. A team headed by Chief District Officer Shashi Shekhar Shrestha inspected affected areas in Urlabari-4 and Rajghat-1 to assess threat posed to the human settlements there.



Similarly, 250 houses in Mahadeva-7 have been isolated after the swelling Ratuwa river changed its course from east to west.



Likewise, crops worth around two million were destroyed by flood in Shantipur-11, Ilam.



Several places in Nepalgunj including Ganeshpur, Salyanibag, Dhamboji, Fultekra, Belaspur, New Road and Puraini have been inundated by the heavy downpour for the last 24 hours.



Several villages around the Rapti river have also been inundated and the Banke district administration has mobilized army, police and arm-ed police force for rescue operations, said administrative officer at the district administration office.



Similarly incessant rainfall has displaced two families of Boharagaun-2 in Baglung. The nine-member family of Maheshwar Sapkota of Jhinwakhola was forced to relocate after their house collapsed due to continuous rainfall. Similarly, the eight-member family of Mangal Nepali was also displaced after his house buried under a landslide.
