Two individuals sent to jail for assaulting doctors at Manipal Hospital

KATHMANDU, Oct 14: Two individuals who assaulted doctors at Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara and vandalized the hospital three weeks ago have been sent to jail. Similarly, seven other individuals involved in the incident were released on bail after paying a bail of Rs 100,000 each.

Police proceeded with the investigation process for those who were arrested under the Security of Health Workers and Health Organizations Act, 2066 BS. Their crimes included assault, lockout, and vandalism.

When the police investigation report was submitted to the court through the Office of the Attorney General, the Kaski District Court decided to take action against them. According to the District Police Office, Kaski, Sushil Karki of Pokhara Metropolitan City-17 Hanuman Tole and Binay Gurung of Pokhara-5 will be sent to jail.

According to DSP Shrawan Kumar BK at District Police Office, Kaski, Sujit Mulmi of Pokhara-4, Abhinas Gurung of Pokhara-5, Arun Gurung and Nitesh Gurung of Pokhara-9, Bivek Gurung and Manish Thapa of Pokhara-20, and Pradeep Gurung of Pokhara-11 were also involved in the incident. He said that ten people whose identity has been revealed and other people whose identity has not been revealed are still absconding. DSP BK, who is also an Information Officer, said a search is currently underway to apprehend them.

On September 25, after Sukmaya Dura, 57, of Lamjung Sundarbazar Municipality-6 died during treatment at the hospital, the relatives of the deceased beat up the doctor at Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality-11 Phoolbari. The relatives protested and beat up the doctor involved in the treatment, accusing the patient's death was due to the doctor's negligence in the treatment.

Kaski police arrested nine people and started an investigation following the hospital's vandalism. Due to the incident at Manipal Hospital in Pokhara, doctors from all over the country, including those from Kaski, stopped non-emergency services and launched a protest. The doctors eventually resumed their duties after the government took action against the assailants and assured them that legal action would be taken.
