A TV journalist on Thursday showed an ignoble lack of morality by trying to blackmail police. Pujan Ghimire, Jhapa representative of Sagarmatha Television, was arrested for demanding Rs 50,000 with a video of security personnel receiving hush money. [break]
He had shot a video that shows a revenue patrol team of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force receiving bribe from commoners entering Nepal from India.
On the direction of Jhapa CDO Gehanath Bhandari, a team of officials comprising Assistant CDO Yogendra Dulal and Police Inspector Chandra Rajbanshi held Ghimire.
SP of Jhapa Tarani Prasad Lamsal said SP of Armed Police Force Bikash Aryal will face action as the video clearly shows him bargaining money. He said further investigation into the case was underway.
President of Jhapa chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists Ganesh Pokharel said Ghimire had informed him that he has shot a video of police demanding hush money. “Ghimire committed a big crime by trying to blackmail police instead of broadcasting the video to inform public,” he said.
He said this was the result of the trend of recruiting journalists by some of the big media houses based in Kathmandu without following proper selection process and their hesitancy to pay salary.
