KATHMANDU, May 30: The Tribhuvan University (TU) postponed the Free Students Union (FSU) elections Thursday as student unions failed to resolve dispute over mass admissions in the TU´s constituent colleges.

After four major student unions agreed to postpone the FSU polls for an indefinite period rather than resolving the dispute, which was caused by the en masse admissions of thousands of students in various colleges, early Thursday morning, the executive council of the TU took a decision to this effect later in the day. Now, the TU will announce a fresh date for the FSU polls once major student unions iron out differences pertaining to the en-masse admissions of students. [break]

On May 16-17, all student unions had enrolled thousands of students, considered to be their voters, in various constituent colleges of the TU. They had persuaded the colleges to keep their administrations and bank counters open until late night in order to enroll as many students as they could, which eventually led to a dispute among them. While some student unions were for scrapping admissions of all students enrolled on May 16-17, some demanded cancellation of only those admissions which were done without following due procedures.

During a meeting with the TU authorities on Thursday, All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) - one affiliated to the UCPN (Maoist) and other affiliated to the CPN-Maoist, and Nepal Students Union (NSU) were split between two groups - one demanding cancelation of all admissions and the other demanding a fair investigation into the en-masse enrollments.

TU´s decision to postpone the FSU polls sparked protests in several parts of the country. In Rajbiraj, Madhesi Students Forum Nepal and Students Forum, which is close to Sadbhavana Party, vandalized Mahendra Bindeshwari Multiple Campus protesting the TU´s decision to postpone the FSU elections. The college administration has said that property worth Rs 1 million were vandalized. Meanwhile, the ANNISU-R close to the CPN-UML blocked vehicular movement along the main thoroughfare of Janakpur against vandalism in the college. The NSU also staged peaceful protests against vandalism.
