KATHMANDU, Jan 19: After 19 days of closure Tribhuvan University has decided to reopen all its offices starting Wednesday, said TU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Madhav Sharma on Monday.

The decision comes after TU professors and residents of Kirtipur held dialogue with agitating TU Victims Struggle Committee (TUVSC) to reopen the country´s oldest university. [break]

The TU administration had closed down all its departments in Kirtipur and Office of the Controller of Examination at Balkhu after agitating Tribhuvan University Victims Struggle Committee (TUVSC) vandalized the office of Vice Chancellor Sharma and some other TU departments on January 1. The TU offices had been shut down since then.

The vandalizing happened shortly after TU authorities said the demands were beyond the university’s means.

Dr Sharma told myrepublica.com on Monday that the TU authorities, however, is yet to sit for a formal dialogue to resolve the five-point demand of the TUVSC.

VC Sharma also said that regular classes at central departments will resume once the winter holidays is over.

Narendra Maharjan, one of TUVSC member, said that they had never pressurized the TU administration to shut down its offices. "TU had closed the offices on its own." He said that their five-point demand must be fulfilled.

TUVSC has been protesting for the last two months demanding that the TU provide 60 percent concessions in medical treatment for Kirtipur residents at TU-run medical colleges, provide scholarships every year to at least five students from Kirtipur in all TU departments and ensure that the 60 per cent of the TU staffers are from Kirtipur.

Meanwhile, senior professors belonging to Nepal University Teachers´ Association (NUTA) on Sunday alleged that Kirtipur locals are raising the issue of compensation and other facility as Maoist Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal failed to live up to his promises he made during Constituent Assembly (CA) election campaign.

Maoist Chairman Dahal, who is prime minister and chancellor of the University, had allegedly assured to return the unused land acquired by TU some 52 years back to the landowners and also provide compensation to those who have yet to receive the money for their land once he joined the government. Dahal was elected from Kathmandu Constituency 10 in last year’s Constituent Assembly elections.
