The employees clashed with policemen while trying to padlock the UGC, and a few of them, including Tribhuvan University Employees´ Association (TUEA) president Bhoj Basnet and general secretary Basu Baskota, sustained minor injuries.
The TUEA had on Sunday issued a three-day ultimatum for the UGC to address its demand of providing allowances for uniform. The TUEA padlocked the UGC after the ultimatum expired.
"We want uniform allowances because we are also government employees like civil servants," TUEA president Basnet said. The government had decided to provide an annual allowance of Rs 7,500 to all civil servants two years ago.
Meanwhile, issuing a statement on Wednesday, the UGC has asked the TUEA to withdraw its strike as the indefinite strike can have negative impact on allocation of periodic grants to universities. The UGC has also said that it has already recommended the Ministry of Education (MoE) to provide uniform allowances to the university employees.
