Kathmandu, March 11: Unified CPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and the office-bearers of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) have held discussions today.

In the discussions that took place at Dahal's residence at Lazimpat, the UCPN (Maoist)chairman is learnt to have urged the TRC to take initiatives towards addressing the situation following the latest decision of the Supreme Court regarding the jurisdiction of the commission, saying the court decision would push the country towards a conflict again. He argued that the cases related to the conflict period fell under the commission's jurisdiction.

Dahal said that although some points mentioned in the latest decision of the SupremeCourt were acceptable all points of the verdict were not.

Although there is the provision in the Comprehensive Peace Accord signed between the then government and the rebel CPN (Maoist) which stipulates that the TRC would look into all the issues related to the conflict period, this stipulation has been overturned by the Supreme Court's latest decision, Dahal expressed his displeasure with the TRC officials.

The Supreme Court, through a decision on February 26, stated that the TRC could not look into the incidents related to the conflict period which are under consideration of the courts and neither could grant general amnesty.

The TRC officials, in the discussions, stated that they would move ahead based on the provisions stipulated in the TRC Act 2071 and the consensus of the political parties.

They said they could not do anything regarding amending the Act and suggested Dahal to discuss this matter amongst the parties themselves, Dahal's aide Shiva Khakurel said.

The UCPN (Maoist) and the CPN-Maoist on Tuesday issued a joint press release expressing their objection to the Supreme Court latest verdict citing it was against the letter and spirit of the Peace Accord.

Commission office-bearers discussed on the commission's works and preparations with the UCPN (Maoist) chair Dahal, according to TRC chairman Surya Kiran Gurung. RSS
