KATHMANDU, Dec 17: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has launched a three-month program called the 'Traffic Ujyaalo Abhiyan' in the capital.
This initiative is launched to ensure smoother flow of traffic and minimize the number of accidents on the roads by providing more awareness to people. The division plans to mobilize volunteers, pedestrians, riders/drivers and college students for the implementation of the initiative.

The division is planning to use more than 130 traffic police personnel for the successful implementation of the program. According to MTPD Chief Shailendra Thapa, every single year more than 2,000 deaths occur due to road mishaps.
Thapa believes that even if 2 or 3 of those deaths can be avoided it would mean much more to him than the pension he would receive for his 30 years of service with the police.
