Tourist arrival up 20 percent

KATHMANDU, Oct 2: The number of tourists visiting Nepal last month surged by more than 20 percent when compared to the corresponding month last year.



According to immigration office at Tribhuvan International Airport, tourists´ arrival went up by 20.6 percent to 41,331. [break]



The figures released showed that the arrivals from South Asian region have shown the growth of 49.1 percent. The arrivals from Bangladesh stood at 79.5 percent, Pakistan 43.9 percent and India 40.9 percent.



However, the arrivals from Sri Lanka have dipped by 10.6 percent, according to the report.



During the first nine month, a sustained growth of 22.8 percent has been observed in the arrivals from the South Asian region as compared to the same period last year.



Other Asian countries, with the exception of South Asian Region, have registered the growth of 15.2 percent in September. Arrivals from China, however, have been positive with 19.7 percent.



The report further showed that the arrivals from Malaysia and South Korea have increased significantly to touch 68.5 percent and 52.1 percent respectively. However, the arrivals from Japan spiraled down to 7.7 percent compared to the same month last year.



Visits from Europe have been positive with 9.4 percent growth, but flow slackened off from UK, Norway, Switzerland and Czech Republic in September.



The data showed that a total of 36,921 foreign tourists departed from TIA in September 2010.



The number of Nepali arrivals stood at 55,936 against 58,190 departures in the same month.
