What you don´t want here are any old biscuits, crackers or cookies. You don´t want fruity cream biscuits whose creams taste all mediciny; you don´t want chocolate-cream biscuits whose chocolate is all cracked, chipped and chapped; you don´t want crackers that are unevenly baked and taste more wheatishly sodden than they should; and you definitely don´t want stone-hard cookies that chip your tooth.
What you want are biscuits, crackers and cookies divine. You want your fruity creams to actually taste like fruit. You want your chocolate cream to be rich. You want your crackers to be more crackly and papery, not heavy and dense. And you want your cookies to taste as if they were born in vats of butter.
If your budget is not all that stretchable then you can have these delectables in their Malaysian avatars; if your budget is a bit more elastic, then you can give Danish style butter cookies a try. And luckily for you, you can buy all of these tinned-- which means you save some by buying in bulk; and the tins themselves have such eye-catching designs printed on them that they make for pretty handsome jars as well.
So what will be the damage on your wallet if you choose to buy these tinned biscuits, crackers and cookies?
Malaysian tinned biscuits in pineapple, vanilla, cappuccino-cream and strawberry-cream flavors come in 500- to 900- gm tins, and they cost between Rs 400 to 500. They are sold under different brand names: 21st Century, Western Classic, Chat Bitz, Always, Daily Delights, All Time, and so on.
Malaysian cream crackers hover in the lower to the mid 400´s range: a 900 gm tin costs Rs 475 at the Bluebird Mall; an 800 gm tin costs Rs 418 at Bhatbhateni and a 650 gm tin costs Rs 435. If you think crackers are boringly bland and don´t think crackers are worth the investing, think again: they are so versatile you can do anything with them: you can dip them in tea or Bournvita; layer cheese and sardines on them; or you can even lather them with butter, sprinkle sugar on top and then bake them until the sugars carmelize-- to create a perfectly crunchy snack.
But if you want to go all the way, then try Danish style butter cookies-- they are the tops. A tad more expensive, true-- for example, 250 gm tins cost Rs275, 480 gm tins cost Rs 550 and 700 gm tins cost Rs 875 at Kastamandap Bazaar-- but you´ll have your guests literally polishing them off by the tins if you let them.
