KATHMANDU, Nov 6: TikTok has been officially registered in Nepal. TikTok has been registered in Nepal after obtaining a PAN number from the office under the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).
The concerned company must take a PAN number to register a social network in the country. TikTok will now be required to pay mandatory tax on transactions within Nepal.
The application submitted by TikTok to register in Nepal was approved by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT) before the Tihar festival. According to the MoCIT, TikTok received the approved letter on Tuesday.

Gajendra Kumar Thakur, joint secretary and spokesperson for the MoCIT, said that TikTok has agreed to conduct its activities according to the existing laws of Nepal. Thakur said that as TikTok operates within Nepali territory under Nepal’s law, it would be easier for the government to take action against TikTok if there are activities contrary to it.
TikTok’s Singapore office will look after Nepal. TikTok has designated Ram Bahadur Thapa as the contact person in Nepal. The government will communicate through Thapa if there is any coordination with TikTok. Similarly, Thakur said that TikTok has also provided a separate tool to the Cyber Bureau to investigate cyber crime related incidents. TikTok will also help in digital education and tourism promotion of Nepal.
On August 22, the cabinet decided to lift the ban imposed on the Chinese video sharing platform TikTok from last year November 12, stating that the government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal had destroyed social harmony. TikTok started to operate from September 5.
The MoCIT has already written correspondence to Facebook’s Mother Company Meta, X and other social networks to proceed with the registration process. The MoCIT is also preparing to send correspondence to Telegram soon.
