Three Star survives ANFA Academy scare to enter quarters

By
POKHARA, Jan 29: Star-studded Nabil Three Star Club was lucky to beat ANFA Academy 5-4 in tiebreakers to enter the quarterfinals of the Seventh Aaha Gold Cup Football Tournament at Pokhara Stadium Thursday. [break]

The ANFA boys dominated the entire match, most of which was played in Three Star’s half, but failed to score the deserving goal and eventually suffered a heartbreaking defeat as Three Star keeper Kiron Chemjong saved Jagjeet Shrestha’s penalty in the shootout.

“We were outplayed by ANFA Academy as we lacked co-ordination,” Three Star coach Bal Gopal Maharjan conceded after the match. “But we will improve and play better against Nepal Police Club in the next match,” Maharjan added looking forward to the quarterfinal clash with the league champions on Monday.

The match went into tiebreakers after both teams failed to find the net in regulation time or in the added extra-time of 30 minutes.

Bikash Singh Chhetri, Anjan KC, Anil Ojha, Yugal Kishore Rai and Bijay Gurung converted their shots for Three Star while Rabi Thapa Magar, man-of-the-match Rohit Chand, Sabindra Shrestha and Shiva Shrestha beat Chemjong in the tiebreakers.

BN Sporting Club Bangladesh takes on Dharan Football Club on Friday.

The 11-day tournament features 12 teams including one each from India and Bangladesh. The winning team will purse Rs 150,000 and the runner-up Rs 75,000 in this biggest football tournament to be held outside Kathmandu Valley.
