The unstoppable painter

Lasata Tuladhar has always been the residential go-to artist. Everyone who’s ever got a whiff of her existence knows that out of her 206 bones none are non-creative. She could never keep her fingers still, not when the world seemed like one large canvas to her.

She drew on paper, canvas, walls and anything that had a surface. Children doodle on walls despite parents chiding them against doing so. To them, their barely legible scratches are pieces of art greater in value than any at the Louvre. But what is often lost with age, Lasata kept at it. Over the years she has transformed from a doodler to a full-fledged artist.

And her room is a living, breathing evidence of this. Clad in hazes of purple, it is no ordinary room. “Your own room is the most important space you own so giving it color really just complements the ones you hold within and makes it more personal, more you,” she says.
And she’s been at it for a long time really, earlier than memory serves. She drew Angry Bird and all things adorable on the walls of her room as she observed her older sister do so herself. Her father never minded the possibilities of forever-marred walls if that was what it took for Lasata to tap into the depths of her artistry.

What came off it is an immaculately distinguishable room that reveals Lasata in her truest self. A life size portrait of Justin Beiber, painted in all his shades and glory overlooks her bed – a nod to her almost decade-long spanning love for the singer. Alternate to the wall is a gigantic Galaxy wall art in all its hues and tones. Cluttered all over the room are painted hints of musical notation to testify for her love of music and this is all Lasata’s own doings.

The wall arts only took a few days to make. “I search for pictures on Google, Pinterest, Tumblr and take time to absorb works of certain artists. It is then that the ideas begin to take shape. I then turn photos into graphs with editing apps and sketch them on the wall and the colors then slowly follow”, she says adding, “There are too many times when I end up with disappointing results despite all the hard work but the trick is to keep going. It may be bad work but it’s still yours and that’s what matters most anyways.”

She also has room for the many musical equipment she owns. Over them are photos on a string, an indoor plant to give the room a raw feel, and the essentials: A dresser, a study table, and a bed.

“I experience a huge sense of accomplishment every time I’m in my room. I have spent many nights painting on the walls not because I was forced by a deadline but because I had this sense of urgency to see my work complete. I gain strength every time I look around and see all the work I’ve done. I feel there’s nothing I can’t do if I could do that,” says Lasata adding that she takes painstaking care in keeping her room organized but the effort is well worth it. She has a room that feels like an extension of her personality, and she would do everything possible to ensure it stays that way.
