KATHMANDU, July 4: Bibek Adhikari of Everest Boarding School has scored 93.37 percent, in his SLC examination, this year.

He has not only passed with distinction but also is the highest scorer in all Nepal, claimed his school.[break]

Similarly, Indra Tamang of Jana Premi Higher Secondary School, Kaushaltar is the declared second position holder of this year´s SLC examinations with 92.75 percent, according to the school. While Bibek has scored a whooping 747 marks out of the total 800, Indra is right behind with 742 of the 800.

Scoring the highest is definitely not the only similarity between these two. There is also similarity in what and who they give credit to their success. Bibek gives credit to hard work, his family and his school. "I regularly spent time with my books," he says and adds that his family and his school were always of great support to him.

Indra agrees at Bibek´s opinion but stresses that apart from his family, teachers were also of great help.

"You can always trust your teacher and that too blindly," he claims. Indra has been studying with scholarship in his school for ´as long as remembers´. His principal, Ravi Prasad Aacharya, is extremely happy with the way Indra has performed. He has also decided that he and the school will finance Indra´s education lifelong.

"The school had decided on financing his education long time back, at that time he was not even a grade ten student," claims Aacharya. Tamang, he adds does not come from a well-to-do family. His father is a farmer. The school, therefore, will help him right through his MBBS course and until he becomes a professional doctor.

Adhikari´s family too is not at a very comfortable financial position. His father´s microbus that runs from Butwal to Bardibas is the only source of income in the family. His mother is a housewife.

Both of the students are quite sure of what they are going to do. While Bibek wants to take up engineering at a good college in Kathmandu, Indra, will take up science and join MBBS to fulfill his life-long dream of being a doctor.

                                                  Indra Tamang

Both the achievers opine that the marks one scores at SLC exams should not be the determining factor in choosing subjects. "I always wanted to be doctor and a part-time teacher and that is what I will do," says Tamang while Adhikari has recently decided to take up engineering. "I was not sure what I should take up even until yesterday but now I know I want to become an engineer," he said.

While Adhikari stresses on the need to keep family status in mind before choosing a faculty, Tamang believes interest in the field is the most important element.

Bibek had been a student of Arniko Boarding School, Kailali up to grade seven and was transferred to Everest only in grade eight. For Indra it has only been Jana Premi School.

Talking about their SLC experience the boys claim that it was only the first day that was stressful, the rest of the exams were quite easy. "It is just like any other exam," said Tamang. Both of them are extremely overwhelmed and pleasantly surprised with the achieved results. Neither of them had expected such results.

For all their friends who did not achieve as much as them, they both have a piece of advice. Bibek advises not to give up and do better next time, while Indra says talking to teachers and finding out weaknesses will be beneficial not only for the next exam but throughout life.

Both these boys have achieved something, claim their teachers, and we have no doubt. Indra seemed more than happy exclaiming his joy talking to Republica about his accomplishment, while it was quite a tough ride getting in contact with Bibek owing to the colleges in Kathmandu who have been calling him constantly offering ´great scholarships´.
