‘Karkash’, the film, starts with the firing of the band members from their gig, and the subsequent falling out just before a big band competition. After the vocalist (Alan Gurung) quits the band (Karkash), the guitarists (Raymon Das Shrestha and Satya Raj Acharya) and the drummer (Daya Hang Rai) persuade Ivan (Suraj Singh Thakuri) to step in as the new vocalist.[break]
Ivan steals a big amount of cash and drugs, which inadvertently falls into the trio’s hands.
Though ‘Karkash’ has a lot of action going on, the film ultimately appears to be dragging. The over the top advertising gimmick, especially of a certain beer brand, will strain the viewer’s nerves. The director has missed out on an interesting character by failing to flesh out the boss’ role. Instead there are too many screen shots for insignificant characters.
The audience does have the chance to laugh out loud during many moments in the film, but the storyteller has decided to rely on the same boring references. Harshika Shrestha as Suni, the sharp tempered girlfriend of Ivan, brings nothing appealing to the film.
However, Karkash rallies up towards the end. Interesting is the character of Looniva Tuladhar as the lascivious housewife. The portrayal of the father-son relationship between Rajendra Khadgi and Raymon is a pleasant watch, though Khadgi doesn’t make a very believable father. But he brings out some funny action to the screen.
‘Karkash’ is another reminder that though Nepali films have become better looking, the story tellers still need to put in quite a lot of hard work.
