A voice, perhaps everyone’s heard. His books ‘Harayeko Hath’, ‘Ghaito ma Gham’ (a collection of plays for children) and ‘Aau sathi gau geet’ (a collection of songs for children) are widely available in the market today.
Basudev Munal worked for 20 years in Radio Nepal. Staring from 1974, he anchored the popular children’s program ‘Baal Karyakram’ till 2002. He wrote and sang many songs for children, also wrote stories and plays for them.
Bhanu Memorial High School in Pani Pokhari, Kathmandu recently commemorated him for such works. On December 28, 2012 the school celebrated Parents’ Day and took the opportunity to confer honor on Munal. The students were amazed and happy to see him in their midst. Munal inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp. Students, then, proceeded to present the welcome song, different dance routines and caricatures. Khagraj Baral, examination controller for SLC examination board, was the guest of honor in the event. While he presented Munal with a khada and a plaque, the emcee described the various works of the artist.
Hearing the details of Munal’s works, Sabal Regmi, studying in class three, was amazed. “We need to do a lot of good work before we are honored,” he exclaimed. Sitting next to him, Nikisha Tiwari said, “Of course. He has done a lot of great work and so he is being honored today.” Class two students, Pranita Lama asked, “If I do good things, I will also be honored, right?”
As they were talking, everyone around them burst out clapping. They looked towards the stage to see the guest of honor launching ‘Ghaito ma Gham’ and ‘Aau sathi gau geet’, written by Basudev Munal and edited by Yeshu Shrestha. They joined in the clapping. During the program, Munal distributed awards to students and entertained the crowd with songs and poems.
