The KGH Time Capsule will be sealed by the founder of the hotel, Karna Sakya, on January 1, 2011, to be opened by the senior-most member of Sakya family after four decades on January 1, 2050.
“The idea came to me when I was watching the movie “Knowing” where a group of students draw pictures for the school’s time capsule in 1959 and is opened in 2009. One of the girls has drawn a weird system of numbers that relates to disasters and with the end of the world.” informs Rajan Sakya, the CEO of KGH. So he sends out this interesting proposition to some of his regular guests to place something inside the time capsule for their future loved ones or future guests of the hotel.

Being more than just a creative idea for the farsighted business promotion for the hotel, it also intends to create a bond with a generation of people not even born yet. With almost 12,000 emails sent to his regular guests, the time capsule has already created a grand buzz amongst his guests. The hotel has already received some 50 sealed packages for the time capsule since its announcement made four months ago.
The items in the Time Capsule will be securely interred in the KGH garden in front of the statue of the Buddha. Suggested items to be kept in are photos, letters, predictions, diaries or anything of small sizes, as space is limited. The items are to be sealed in a bag mentioning who it should be opened by or mailed to. They also plan to enlist all the people who have put their memories in the Time Capsule and their recipients in the hotel’s official website.
The idea is to draw people to Nepal and collect their souvenirs. But in case they are not here, the items will be shipped to the recipients free of cost.
When asked about the security arrangements and guarantees provided for the Time Capsule over the period of 40 years, Sakya says, “In forty years, there’s no guarantee that even Nepal might be here. This proposition is for all people who want to do this out of their genuine interest. It’s all a matter of trust.”
He also told us that the time capsule is not just open for their guests but for anyone interested. They still have a whole year of collections to do, especially with the approaching Visit Nepal Year 2011.
With the amount of emails he has been getting about the time capsule and the impressive responses received so far, Rajan Sakya is left to wonder how big of a hole he will need to dig for the hermetically sealed container called the KGH Time Capsule.
