ITAHARI, Jan 11: Normal life has been affected in six districts in the eastern region since early Wednesday morning due to a strike called by the haru community.

Transport services have come to a halt in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha and Udaypur districts due to the strike, giving a tough time to commuters who are forced to pay exorbitant rikshaw fares in the absence of other means of transportation. [break]

Activists of the Tharuwan Kochila State Committee headed by UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Santosh Tharu have called the banda in the region, saying that the government did not formally write to them for talks to negotiate their demands.

The Thuru body’s demands include declaration of the eastern Kochila region as a separate state and bulk entry of youths of the Tarai’s marginalized communities into the national army.
